Supporting teens—and the parents who support them

Adolescence changes more than the child.

As teens develop greater independence, families often find that old ways of communicating, setting boundaries, or solving problems no longer work as well as they once did. A teenager may be struggling with anxiety, school pressure, friendships, identity, or independence while a parent is simultaneously wondering how much to intervene, what limits to set, and how to stay connected.

At Forward Focus Counseling, parenting counseling and adolescent therapy are connected by an understanding of the relationship between teens and the people who care for them.

When should I step in—and when should I give my teen space?

Parenting an adolescent can leave even experienced parents questioning what to do. You may be wondering how to set limits without creating constant conflict, how to respond to anxiety or school stress, or how to stay connected while allowing your teenager to become more independent.

Parenting counseling provides a space to understand what may be happening underneath the behavior, identify patterns that are not working, and develop practical ways to communicate, set boundaries, reduce conflict, and strengthen connection.

Your child does not necessarily need to be the person in therapy for things at home to begin changing. Sometimes supporting the parent is an effective place to start.

Adolescent & teen therapy

Support matched to different stages of adolescence.

A 10-year-old entering adolescence has different developmental needs from a 17-year-old preparing for adulthood. Rachel provides developmentally responsive counseling that recognizes those differences while considering the importance of family relationships, school, peers, identity, and growing independence.

Adolescents ages 10–13 receive support through the transition from childhood into adolescence, while teens ages 14–18 have a space to address increasing independence, identity, relationships, high-school pressures, and decisions about the future. Parent involvement is considered thoughtfully based on age, needs, treatment goals, and circumstances.

Sometimes the concern is what is happening between you.

Communication can deteriorate as parents become more worried and involved while teenagers seek more privacy and independence. Attempts to help can be interpreted as criticism or control, while a teenager’s withdrawal can leave parents feeling shut out.

Rachel helps families understand these patterns, improve communication, establish appropriate boundaries, and find ways for parents and adolescents to remain connected as their relationship changes.
